The 12-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is focused on academic reading, writing, listening, speaking and presenting which prepares the student for the TOEFL test and more importantly entrance into Queen's University. The classes contain students from all over the world with whom you will share the experiences of studying abroad. The teachers are very experienced as some have previously taught overseas; therefore, they know the best way to present the lectures. Outside of the classroom I recommend participating in socio-cultural activities, which include several out-of-town trips to major Canadian cities nearby such as Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. The City of Kingston is also not far from the United States, allowing for the opportunity to visit. Overall, I have enjoyed the Canadian culture especially in the winter time as I learned how to snowboard and I watched many hockey games.

I choose Queen’s School of English because of its varied opportunities for improvement of my English skills. The QSoE’s program definitely improved my written and spoken English skills. The program contains diverse methods to enhance English skills and it also focuses on individual needs of the student. The QSoE teachers and staff are always very helpful and as a student I am never alone with my questions and problems. Another very important reason to attend to the program was the socio-cultural part of the program. I never had the chance to meet so many different cultures at one place. The students can join different kinds of activities and get easily in contact with each other which makes it so enjoyable. The experiences I made at the School of English will help me for my university studies and for my future life.

I came to Queen’s School of English because of its reputation. QSoE’s program is very academic and focuses on many skills. There are also many socio-cultural activities that helped me improve my conversation skills and meet students from all over the world. Before attending the School, I needed to improve my English language skills before entering the job market. The 12-Week program helped me prepare for my career and made me feel more confident. What I learned at QSoE will also help me if I want to apply for an MBA program.

Spending 3 months at Queen's School of English (QSoE) has been like travelling all around the world. Besides learning English, I learned about many other cultures as well. It was a surprise for me when I entered QSoE the first day of school and I discovered I was the only Canadian student. QSoE is more than a school; it is a combination of activities with monitors and fantastic people all gathered to learn English. QSoE is an excellent school for those who want to improve their English skills through conversations, debates, and a lot more. As an advanced level student, I improved on my writing and my capability to defend my opinions and my ideas in English. QSoE gives you the opportunity to live in homestay, which I think is one of the best ways to improve English. I would start my experience over again and again...

I came to Kingston to learn English in a group from Shanghai. During the 4- week EAP and 13-week BIP, I have improved my listening, reading, spoken and writing skills. I had an internship at the City of Kingston. I’ve learned more about Canadian government, about it’s leadership management and operation. I’ve done some research jobs of the City of Kingston. It’s a good chance for me to compare the Canadian government with the Chinese government and exchange views with Canadian government officials. - BIP student

I was fortunate enough to have previously attended Queen's School of English. QSoE is not just an institution but also a family. The teachers are very experienced and supportive of the students individual needs. Furthermore, the staff are very helpful in organizing school activities and helping students with their problems. You can meet new friends from all over the world. Also, QSoE is located in Kingston, a historic town that enables you to enjoy a peaceful lifestyle while not being distracted by the fast pace environment of big city life. Overall, QSoE was the perfect place to study at.

The EAP Program at QSoE was very challenging for me, but at the same time it was an excellent choice that I've made. I studied English as if I had been a university student in Canada. What I liked most was that I could study English through various methods. Some of these methods included writing an academic essay, giving a presentation, listening to a podcast, visiting an art gallery, and so much more. The EAP program was not just a great program to study English, but also a great program to experience the culture of Canada. With the well-organized curriculum, support, and opportunities, I am very satisfied with it!

I am Hao Zhang from China. I have been in Canada since August 2009 and have enjoyed studying at Queen's University, School of English in their English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. Upon completion in August 2010, I attained 80% at the advanced level in listening, speaking, critical reading, writing, academic research skills, and oral presentation skills. Now I am taking one graduate course in Electrical Engineering at Queen's University, which prepares me to start my Masters degree in September 2011. The memorable time I spent at Queen's School of English prompted me to stay in Canada to pursue my graduate studies. What I gained at QSoE was not only the academic knowledge required for entry into a Canadian university but also a marvelous experience and an understanding of Canadian cultures. I extremely recommend Queen's School of English to students who are planning to study abroad or preparing for studies at a Canadian University.

I like the oral/aural focus of the program; I like the social activities with the monitors and the school trips. I also appreciate that the teachers are always worried about teaching us English skills as best as they can and I think the coordinators are great and try to make us feel as we were at home. Actually, everybody of the QSoE is very accessible and approachable, always ready to help us. In addition, I found amazing that we, students of the QSoE, as any other Queen’s students, can use the Physical Education Centre, free transport system and all the other amenities that Queen's has.
