English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

QSoE's 12-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program, consisting of 22.5 hours per week, is designed to help students achieve personal, academic, and career success through English language training. The course joins listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with a focus on university-style tasks that prepare students for academic life and success beyond university. The curriculum emphasizes Canadian higher education learning strategies such as critical thinking, task-based learning, and academic integrity, while also developing practical career skills like teamwork, independent work, and project planning.

  • 12-week, 22.5-hour-per-week English training for personal, academic, and career success
  • Curriculum focuses on university assignments, critical thinking, and real-life work skills
  • Electives in areas like sports, drama, business, and invention
  • Includes extracurricular activities and optional weekend trips to major attractions

Canadian Academic Skills, English and Sustainability (CASES)

The United Nations has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a global call to action to save the planet and our way of life. Join us at QSoE in exploring these goals and developing your English and academic skills in a 3-week integrated skills course. Students will gain transferable skills to use in their studies and employment, and to positively impact the world we live in for a healthy and prosperous future.

Join us for an unforgettable 4-week English courses which joins integrated English practice with incredible activities and trips to some of the most recognizable landmarks in Canada such as Niagara Falls and Parliament Hill.

QBridge

An English language pathway for academically competitive students for admission to a Queen’s undergraduate degree program who do not meet the required English language proficiency admission standard.

The QBridge pathway ensures that students are linguistically, academically, and culturally prepared to complete their Queen’s undergraduate degree studies.

  • QBridge Accelerated: 8-9 week, 30 hours per week intensive academic preparation pathway program
  • QBridge EAP: 12 week, 22.5 hours per week pathway program for academic success
  • Curriculum focuses on academic language skill refinement needed for success in university undergraduate studies
  • For students who have been given a conditional offer of admission to a Queen's University undergraduate program.
  • Includes Student Life program

Academic English Foundations (AEF)

Join us for the first 6 weeks of our 12-week intensive EAP program. AEF students will take part in the same high-quality, integrated skills classes as our EAP students, but will receive their final grade and certificate at midterm.

AEF is a wonderful opportunity for students who many not have the time to study in a full-12-week program, but who still want to take part in detailed practice and development of their English skills.

  • 6-week, 22.5-hour-per-week English training for personal, academic, and career success
  • Curriculum focuses on university assignments, critical thinking, and real-life work skills
  • Electives in areas like sports, drama, business, and invention

English for Beginners

English for Beginners is a free 6-module online ESL course that will give you the chance to improve your English skills with some fun activities. When you finish the course, you will receive a digital badge of completion.

Language Support

Language Support hero image

Language Support provides weekly online tutorials for university students currently enrolled in an English-language degree or diploma program. Here, you will improve your academic English language skills and apply them in your coursework.

Language Support tutorials group students with others in their area of study. Students meet weekly with qualified and experienced instructors to work on the following:

  • 10-week, 1.5-3 hours per week program focussed on specific skill development with two or three other Queen’s students with similar needs
  • enhance understanding of the course and assignment expectations
  • review feedback received from course-related assignments
  • polish academic writing skills
  • learn about resources to support academic success

Pathways and Embedded Programs

Queen’s School of English is proud to partner with many different parts of the University and Kingston community to provide language programming to support student journeys from English Learner to Graduate:

English for Immigration and Citizenship Law Independent Study

This winter 12–week intensive English language program develops knowledge, skills, and strategies for academic success in the Queen's Faculty of Law Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law. It is only offered online once per year from early January to early April.

Please note: Students enrolling in this course are not enrolling in the Graduate Certificate in Immigration and Citizenship Law.

This program is intended for pre-applicants to the Graduate Certificate in Immigration and Citizenship Law, i.e. those who do not have conditional offers.

  • 12-week, 22.5-hour-per-week (full time) online English classes
  • Curriculum focuses on assignments, critical thinking, and real-life work skills for Queen’s Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law students
  • Applicants are pre-screened at no cost to ensure good fit with program before registration and enrollment
  • Offered only in winter for students who intend to apply to Queen’s Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law
